Relational and Family Therapist (MMFT)

Counselling Psychology Practicum Student

SATURDAY APPOINTMENTS ARE VIRTUAL ONLY

Hello, my name is Mairo and I use she/her pronouns.

I am excited to join the Positive Perspectives team as a practicum student under the supervision of Homa Houshmand. I am currently completing my master’s degree in Counseling Psychology at Yorkville University and I am a Qualifying Canadian Certified Counsellor with the Canadian Counseling and Psychotherapy Association.

I have worked and volunteered with various community health organizations in supporting roles that involved mental health support.

My favourite part about being a therapist is supporting and witnessing people thrive in their own authentic and unique way. I view it as my own small (but big in many ways) contribution to making our community healthier.

I enjoy connecting on topics such as navigating relationships, defining identity - particularly embedded in race, culture, and sexual orientation, life changes, and stress.

I am quite eclectic in my therapy style, and this is to support your uniqueness in how you approach things in life. With that said, my approach draws from Solution-Focused, Cognitive Behavioural, Humanistic and Narrative Therapy as well as Positive Psychology.

I offer in-person sessions in the evenings on Mondays and Fridays, as well as video sessions on Saturdays.

As a therapist and a mom of two toddlers, I very honestly understand the challenges that can come along with not only parenting but the family planning and pregnancy stages too. I am honoured to be able to bring these perspectives to my mental health and psychotherapy practice. I enjoy working collaboratively with caregivers who are feeling stuck in their identity, overwhelmed with their new roles or simply curious to unpack parts of themselves as they move through life transitions. Whether this shows up as grief, trauma, anxiety or depression, please know that all parts of you are welcome in my space.

I operate from a feminist based and culturally diverse lens and my therapeutic approach relies heavily on each individuals own strengths and wisdom. I commonly use a blend of practices from Mindfulness Based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Positive Psychology, Internal Family Systems and/or Narrative Therapy.

Dunja Kovačević, MFT Hi! My name is Dunja and my pronouns are she/they, which means they’re flexible, just like me.

I am an immigrant settler to Treaty 1 territory, a child refugee from the Former Yugoslavia, and a queer femme. I am a Masters level graduate of the Marriage and Family Therapy program from the University of Winnipeg. This means I look at people – individuals, couples, and families – through the lens of relationships and systems we belong to, how these shape our identities, and how we grow.

My background in community work and cultural studies means I think a lot about how power shows up in our lives and relationships. Working towards a more just and inclusive future is at the heart of how I practice and move through the world.

I enjoy connecting with people who are interested in exploring their identities, culture, race, gender, sexuality, intergenerational patterns, or relationships to their different parts. Your richness and complexity are valued here! Working with individuals and communities that have experienced, and survived, trauma is particularly close to my heart and informs my approach.

Since I was a little immigrant kid growing up between cultures, I’ve had a lot of questions. I think questions are important teachers! The common thread that runs through my work is a deep curiosity about individuals, communities and cultures, and the impact of the stories that make up our lives.

In this role, I get to witness people in a really intimate way and share hilarious, insightful, wrenching, and beautiful moments each time we meet. And, as a therapist who started as a client, I know that relationships only move at the speed of trust. As your therapist, I spend a lot of time building trust and connection. There’s space for laughing or breaking down what you’re reading or watching in therapy too!

Though some approaches inform how I think – like Narrative, Just Therapy, Internal Family Systems or Attachment – how we work together is tailored to our relationship, your goals, and your strengths. Here, you drive.

As a neurodivergent and creative person myself, I understand how important it is to have the freedom to show authentically. I want you to know that who you are is welcome here! Feel free to stim, move, and to bring your special interests or creative practices into the room with you. And, if there’s anything I can adjust in session to help you feel more comfortable, just say the word.

I offer in-person or video sessions on Tuesday through Friday.

Hi! My name is Brittney and my pronouns are she/her.

I have my Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Manitoba. I have worked in the area of family violence since 2013 with many years of individual counselling and group facilitation experience. My favourite part of being a therapist is getting to work with others on their counselling goals and noticing with them the progress and associations they are making. Building a trusting relationship is a key part of my job that I enjoy. It is a privilege of mine to provide a safe space for others to feel heard, seen, and understood.

In my work, I like connecting with teens and adults of all backgrounds who are curious about discussing life transitions, change, relationships, and self awareness. I often enjoy working with those who are beginners in therapy, and I look forward to connecting with diverse groups of clients.

As a Registered Social Worker, I value working from an anti-oppressive, culturally safe, and person-centered lens. I place a lot of focus on creating and noticing the feeling of safety in the body. Oftentimes I draw on Internal Family Systems theory to help guide folks towards healing and I tend to incorporate the mind-body connection.

I lean into trauma informed counselling techniques - utilizing CBTm, DBT, Body Oriented Trauma, and Poly Vagal theories to inform how our narrative impacts our experiences. I also like to take the approach of noticing how the systems and environment around us have impacts.

I believe that the quality of our relationships impacts the quality of our lives. We inherit things from our family of origins and have various things happen to us, but we can change our responses and focus on what we can control in our present day. We can recognize the experiences we are having and actively choose something different than what we know from past conditioning or patterns. If you are feeling stuck in some area of your life and want to explore that, I would be happy to hear from you.

I offer in-person, phone, or video sessions during the daytime, evenings and weekends.

Hello lovely people! My name is Kim and I’m the newest member of the Positive Perspectives team. I am so excited to join this wonderful group of women! My pronouns are she/her and I am proud to work and live on Treaty 1 territory.

Here is a little bit about me and the way I work:

I have a decade of experience working with women in community health as a counsellor and registered social worker.

I am passionate about women’s wellness and reproductive justice issues. I have experience working with people across the spectrum of reproductive choices including people who are experiencing infertility, pregnancy, decision making counseling and people who have chosen abortion.

In my work with clients, I use an eclectic approach that is tailored to the client.

I use an intersectional feminist lens to my work with folx and I am committed to working from a feminist, anti-racist and decolonizing lens; this work is both personal, professional, and ongoing. I believe it is important to locate ourselves within the broader structures at play such as intersecting forms of oppression and privilege.

In my sessions, I use an integrative approach that includes body based practices and recognizes the importance of accessing the wisdom of the body.

I’m currently nerding out on Polyvagal Theory and I am looking forward to incorporating it more in sessions with clients!

I believe that over the course of our lives, there are times when reaching out to a counsellor can be helpful and finding the right fit is important. I will be welcoming new guests for in-person or video sessions on Mondays from 9:30am-4:30pm starting September 26th.
